An important note about the Google ads on our site: We
unfortunately do not control the content of the ads Google targets for Plagiarized.com.
Google's system uses keywords on our pages to decide what ads it should
show you. As a result - you are likely to see some ads for plagiarism services,
essay downloads, custom written papers, etc. We're working with Google to
see if we can fix that.
Western Illinois University's Bruce Leland maintains "Plagiarism and the Web"
Plagiarism.org.
Also known as turnitin.com, this site has gotten quite a bit of media attention.
They produce software that detects copied papers. Here's how it works: they
have compiled a huge database of papers from the internet, instructors must
register with the site, then require their students to upload their work
to the site for scanning, essays are cross-referenced with the database
and instructors are notified of detected cases of plagiarism. There are
problems with this approach. To begin, they sell their service as foolproof
saying "...papers acquired from the Internet will NEVER be used to fulfill
a course requirement." I have a problem with that sort of statement, clearly
the problem is more complex then they present it to be. The problem is systemic
- you have to address it at levels that no software can help you with. I
also have some questions about the copyright and civil liberty issues raised
by requiring students to submit essays to a database. That being said, plagiarism.org
offers a service that many find useful.
