About
Why?

We believe instructors (everyone from parents through to university professors) feel helpless when faced with this problem. The idea that the younger generation has advanced technologically beyond the comprehension of their elders has become - among some - accepted fact. But this isn't the case at all. In reality, the nature of cheating hasn't changed. What has changed is the speed and ease with which it can be done. However, the ease and speed with which instructors can catch a cheating student has kept pace...

Our goal is to provide a launching pad of sorts for instructors. You start here, and we'll give you the tools you need to quickly determine if a given essay is suspect. Better yet, we'll show you how to prevent students from falling into the plagiarism trap in the first place!

Please Note:

We do understand the plight of students today. More and more students are cheated by an inadequate secondary education, leaving them unprepared for their post-secondary challenges. More and more students are forced to hold down one or more jobs while they attend school due to rising tuition and cuts in student aid. The fact remains however that cheating only serves to leave you unprepared for real life.

If they really want to cheat, there isn't much to stop them from doing so. As long as they are prepared to do all the work necessary to hide the evidence - they probably won't get caught. In our minds, the amount of work involved in covering up your cheating usually falls somewhere near the amount of work involved in doing the work yourself - and the benefits fall far short.

While planning this guide we struggled with several concerns:
  • We didn't want to make all students out to be cheaters. Most students are more than willing to do work themselves - and they are aware of all the benefits doing so entails.
  • We didn't want to make the Internet out to be a haven for cheaters. The fact is, there are far more resources out there for honest students and researchers than there are for cheaters. See the links page for a link to Dr.Gwen's Research site.
Who are you?

The Guide is maintained by Greggory Senechal. He lives in Ottawa (Canada's capital city) and enjoys the occasional burst of attention from Instructors and media sorts. He puts a great deal of work into keeping up to date on the issue of internet plagiarism and considers himself to be one of the most informed people on the net with regard to the subject.

The guide has grown beyond Gregg's ability to handle things himself! Thankfully, a growing team of selfless volunteers have pitched in to help and - in their spare time - work to increase the scope of the guide to better address this important issue.
